The A49 between Ludlow and Leominster did not re-open until shortly before 3pm this afternoon following the accident which took place at Ashton at about 5am.

The road, which is the main artery between Shrewsbury and Hereford, was closed for most of the day in both directions between the junction with the a456 at Woofferton, near Ludlow and the A4112 junction at Stockton, north of Leominster.

Diversions were in place around the stretch of road.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "It is believed a number of beer barrels have fallen onto the highway.

"Highways England are now at the scene and working to get the road re-opened."
