The bungalow was severely damaged by smoke following the blaze at about 12.30am.

It took firefighters two hours to put out the fire at the home in Levi Court, a sheltered housing area in Ellesmere. A man living in the bungalow had managed to get out before firefighters arrived at the scene. He was treated for smoke inhalation and spent the say staying with friends.

Jason Nash, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service's crew manager for Ellesmere, said firefighters evacuated neighbours in the cul-de-sac while tackling the blaze.

Mr Nash said: "When we came here the man in the house had managed to get himself out of the bungalow.

"He was then treated by the ambulance service for smoke inhalation, but he wasn't seriously injured at all.

"I know he's now safe and staying with friends.

"The main damage to the house is smoke damage, but at the moment we do not know what the cause is.

"However, we do know the man isn't a smoker."

Meanwhile, a fire caused by cooking being left on a stove broke out at a home in Telford, at lunchtime.

Firefighters were called to a home in Bridle Court in Madeley, at about 12.20pm and were at the scene for about 20 minutes

Two people were also treated for smoke inhalation after part of a house caught fire overnight.

The fire started in the kitchen, in Abbotts Close in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, at about 1am on Thursday.

Three fire crews from Shrewsbury and a ambulance were sent to the scene.

An ambulance was also sent to the scene, leaving at 1.20am.
