Contractors fenced off the infant section of the playground and have been removing equipment ready for the £375,000 overhaul. Much of the equipment will be retained, refurbished and recycled for use in other town council playgrounds.

Councillor Alan Mosley, leader of the council, said: "I am delighted that work to transform the Quarry play area is moving ahead swiftly.

"This is a really exciting scheme and the town council is proud to be able to take this project forward. It will rejuvenate the area and provide tremendous new facilities for Shrewsbury residents and visitors alike."

Work has been restricted to the infant play area, with the main part of the playground remaining open until after Christmas.

Last month the town council appointed Shrewsbury-based company Ray Parry Playgrounds to transform the site after public votes were cast in favour of its 'Darwin's Islands of Adventure' theme.

The design incorporates traditional play equipment such as slides and swings, as well as fountains and water features, which the council hopes to build in place of the existing paddling pool, subject to acquiring a lease for the land from Shropshire Council.

The play area will fully close after Christmas with a view to the completed park being reopened in the spring.
