Annabelle Tarr, of Telford, said it came as a bit of a shock when little Louise-Mai Worthington decided to make her arrival into the world yesterday – a week before she was due.

The 20-year-old said she was opening presents with her 14-month-old son, Tyler James, at about 7am when she went into labour. Less than three hours later she had given birth to her daughter at her home in Wellington. Louise-Mai was born at 9.45am weighing 7lb 12oz.

"It was a bit of a surprise as she wasn't due for another week," Miss Tarr said. "I was just at home opening presents with my son when I felt something. The next thing I knew I was telling my partner Simon that she was coming. We called an ambulance but she had arrived before it had. It's a bit of a strange Christmas but possibly the best one."

Miss Tarr is now recovering at Shropshire Women and Children's Centre at the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

In total seven babies were born at the centre on Christmas Day – five girls and two boys. Another couple, Ifeoma and Obinna Ude also welcomed a little girl yesterday. The baby, yet to be named, was born at 5.33am at the hospital weighing 7lb 1oz.
