Discussions on Telford & Wrekin Council services under threat

At least two town councils will discuss taking on under-threat services such as libraries in Telford in the wake of swingeing cuts, it has been revealed.

Both Madeley Town Council and Great Dawley Town Council have the cuts on the agenda for full council meetings on January 11 and January 18 respectively.

It comes after Telford & Wrekin Council announced a raft of cuts to front-line services to help meet a £30 million shortfall in its budget over the next two years.

Libraries, markets, youth clubs, community centres and children's centres all face the axe by April 2017 – unless other bodies come forward to take on the running of them.

Council bosses have said they will be looking to town and parish councils in the first instance.

Councillor Lee Carter, cabinet member for finance at Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "We will be talking with many partner and community organisations to together explore alternative ways to continue services that, by April 2017, we will no longer be able to afford to provide."
