Elaine Griffiths said she was a passenger in her daughter Georgina's Volkswagen Golf heading through a town when an unknown object appeared to be thrown at the vehicle, causing one of the windows to break.

The pair could find no evidence of anyone or anything that could have been thrown at their car, but did find a dent in the bodywork on the side of the car. They have urged people to be on their guard following the incident, which happened in Market Drayton in the area of Adderley Road and the junction of Hampton Drive.

Mrs Griffiths, who lives in the Whitchurch area, said: "My daughter Georgina Allwood and I were driving to Morrisons in a white Golf and as we passed the end of Hampton Drive there was a massively loud bang and the rear passenger window behind the driver imploded.

"We had to stop suddenly and then turned in the entrance to Greenfields sports area and went back to where this had happened. Needless to say no-one was there and we couldn't find any sort of missile that could have been thrown at the car.

"However, there was a dent on the side of the car so it looked as if whatever had caused the damage had bounced off. It was dark and wet, and very distressing to my daughter who was driving. The whole window had shattered and was all over the back seat filling her handbag with glass, as well as the seat and footwell.

"The police came out but were unable to do a lot as we had no suspects or evidence, just a lot of damage."

Her daughter said: "It's totally irresponsible to throw things at moving cars, I could have crashed or worse. It was really scary."

Paul Roberts, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said police were called shortly after 4.45pm on Saturday. He added: "There were no injuries and the cause of the window breakage has not been determined."

Witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 378s of January 2.
