Dozens of homes that have been without telephone or broadband connection since New Year's Day may have to wait even longer to be re-connected.

Engineers called out to Church Stretton, where about 100 homes and businesses have been affected, have traced the problem to underground cables that were damaged in the recent wet weather.

Though repairs are now under way it is not yet known when they will be complete.

The underground network is built to withstand some water, but with the continued rain and some flooding in the area an "excessive amount" of water had got into the ducts carrying the cables, Emma Tennant, speaking for Openreach, said.

She said: "As a result, engineers from Openreach, who maintain the local network on behalf of all communications providers, need to replace a 10-metre section of underground cable and carry out other repair work on a second damaged cable."

She said engineers had been out since they were first alerted to the problem but had to carry out investigations to pinpoint the problem.
