Hawkstone Hall, in Marchamley, near Hodnet, had previously been under offer but the deal was not completed.

The Georgian stately home, which sits on an estate dating back as far as 1556, went on the market in 2012 for £5 million but had its price reduced to £4.25 million in 2014.

Nigel Grugeon, of agents Reeves & Partners, said: "It hasn't been sold. A sale was agreed some months ago but for various reasons not associated with the trustees or the property the buyer didn't proceed.

"A fee was agreed and the trustees set a deadline for the contracts to be exchanged but this wasn't met."

The search is now continuing for a buyer, who would become only the fourth owner of the hall in its 550-year history.

Mr Grugeon added: "We have been talking to a number of people who had expressed an interest in the property in the past."

When the sale of the property was agreed last year, Mike Artham, managing director of agents Barbers, said he was not allowed to disclose the identity of the potential buyer, its intended use, or how much the offer was because of confidentiality agreements.

Agents have previously said there has been strong interest from potential buyers, including some from outside the UK, including America.

The property was built around 1700 and has been owned by various members of Parliament over the years.

For the past 90 years, the estate has been owned by The Redemptorists, a Roman Catholic missionary congregation.

The whole estate totals about 88 acres which also includes a former walled kitchen garden.

The residential wing was built in the 1960s and has 50 single bedrooms with bathrooms spread over three floors.
