Accused nurse 'was sacked from last job', court told
A nurse accused of force-feeding a distressed care home resident was dismissed from her previous job for gross misconduct, a court heard.
Mariamma Kailath is standing trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court accused of force-feeding Peter Egan, 83, at Priory Nursing Home in Wellington, Telford, and of failing to complete records stating when he had been given liquids.
Mr John Oates, prosecuting, told the jury yesterday that the 56-year-old had previously worked as a nurse at Hatton Court Care Home, in Cold Hatton, but was dismissed for gross misconduct.
He told the court she had administered medication on several occasions but failed to fill out the appropriate records, leading to the disciplinary action.
Kailath, of Whitchurch Road in Wellington, denies three charges – one of assault by beating, and two of a failure to discharge a duty of care – which date back to July 27, 2014, when she was a nurse at the Priory.
The court heard yesterday that she had started working at the Wellington care home less than a week before the alleged incident, when Mr Egan had been a resident for a matter of days.
Claire Bates, a healthcare assistant at the Priory Nursing Home, previously told the court that she had seen Kailath feeding Mr Egan about 200 millilitres of prescribed energy drink from a beaker.
She said Mr Egan had seemed "distressed" and was putting out his arms as if to say stop. Mr Egan died later the same day, although Mr Oates said that medical experts had found no causal link between his death and "what had happened before".
The trial continues.
