Knifeman, 28, gets suspended prison term
A 28-year-old man has been given an eight-week prison sentence after admitting carrying a large kitchen knife through the streets.
Thomas Alan Watkins, of New Road, Newtown, appeared at Welshpool Magistrates Court yesterday where he was sentenced for possessing an offensive weapon in a public place as well as assault by beating and criminal damage.
Watkins was arrested after carrying the knife in New Church Street, Newtown, on December 5.
Magistrates sentenced him to eight weeks in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to pay an £80 victim surcharge. Magistrates ordered that the knife be destroyed.
He also admitted assaulting Sarah Walsh and breaking a window belonging to her on December 6. The court did not impose any separate penalty but ordered Watkins to pay £20 compensation for the beating and £190 compensation for the cost of the window.
