PICTURED: Firefighters help rescue horse stuck on its side in Shropshire woodland
[gallery]Firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to help save a horse that had become stuck on its side in woodland.
Lemmy the horse was moved onto a mat and eased out of the wooded area at Trefnant, Halfway House, near Shrewsbury, using a rope attached to a tractor.
He was then lifted using a medical harness — with a vet on hand during the rescue today.
But specialist trained animal rescue crews from Wellington Fire Station said they were unsure Lemmy would make it.
They used the harness in a bid to help Lemmy to stand during the operation just after 1pm.
Crews from Minsterley, Tweedale and Wellington went to the scene and were there for some time.
A vet was called in to ensure the animal was calm before the fire service tried to get Lemmy to stand.
Craig Jackson, a spokesman for Wellington Station, said: "We are unsure of Lemmy's future at the moment but our crews and the vet have given him the best possible chance."
Most of the 999 calls regarding animals are put through to Wellington Fire Station, where the crew trained to deal with them is based.
Only last month the crew was called out to help rescue a five-month-old foal stuck in a fence.
