David Kent, of St Julian's Crescent, Shrewsbury, was stopped by police at 10.45pm on January 2 after police spotted his silver Peugeot 206 driving past Montgomery's Tower on Claremont Bank.

Officers stopped the car in Smithfield Road after they saw it swerving across the carriageway. On Tuesday, at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court, Kent admitted drink-driving.

A roadside breath test revealed that he had 46 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. He was banned for three years, fined £150 and ordered to pay £135 costs and £20 victim surcharge.

Abbie Hall, prosecuting, said: "A police constable was on mobile patrol outside Montgomery's Tower. They were driving along Smithfield Road when they saw the car in front swerving across the middle lane. The police stopped the vehicle outside Marks & Spencer. They spoke to the driver and carried out a roadside breath test."

Mr Adrian Roberts, for Kent, said that his client had been out for some drinks at lunchtime with a friend. "He let himself down. He needed to pop to the supermarket and he accepts his actions were a lack of judgement."
