The car, a black Citroen C4, was travelling between Madeley Roundabout and Court Street when the brick was thrown.

The driver, a woman, heard a loud bang and stopped the car to investigate she found a rock or something similar had been thrown from a footbridge.

The woman was uninjured but the brick dented the roof of the car close to the windscreen.

PC Sally Downes said: "This reckless act could have caused far more serious damage and injury or even worse, death.

"We would like to remind everyone that this type of incident can have very serious consequences for all road users."

The incident happened at about 6pm on Friday.
