Telford's Mickey Bushell reveals he almost died from infection last year
Shropshire gold medal winning Paralympic athlete Mickey Bushell has revealed he almost died last year from an infection.
The 25-year-old from Wellington said that he was 12 hours from death after he contracted a urinary tract infection.
After recovering from the infection Bushell is back to training ready for Rio 2016.
He said: "I saw a specialist and he said I was about 12 hours from death really with the infection.
"It was pretty serious – I did one race last year, that's how bad I was and that was before the illness."
Bushell added: "But then I had a CTI infection around April and May which took me out for seven months – I nearly died.
"Coming back from that it was tough but we are back now and we are training hard and we are looking forward to Rio.
"Everything is ticking over nicely now, but I hope this year will be a real turning point after last year"
Before becoming ill Bushell won the T53 class at the European Championships in Swansea in 2014.
He won gold at London 2012 for T53 100m.
He also received the freedom of his home town in 2014.
