Spray paint action over Newport dog mess problem

Angry Newport residents have moved to crack down on irresponsible dog owners – by spray painting the mess they leave behind.

A number of volunteers in Newport are highlighting dirt that has not been picked up so people do not step in it.

It is also a way of highlighting the issue.

Councillor Peter Scott said he has seen 100 cases of dog mess that had not been picked up from the town's pavements.

The independent borough councillor said: "I have had many complaints about dog fouling over the last 12 months and thought it was time to do something about it.

"There are many very responsible dog owners in the Newport area who do pick up after their dogs but it only takes a few irresponsible ones to make it a problem.

"Since we launched the campaign we have identified over 100 separate cases of dog faeces, most of those near areas where our children walk and play – that is not acceptable.

"We are spraying the dog faeces with a harmless luminous paint to highlight the problem, there will be extra signage, direct mailing and a clear up . . . the cost of which will come from my councillor ward fund."

The campaign is centred on three main areas around Newport and Church Aston and is based on awareness and education.

This move comes after a number of glow in the dark posters were placed around the town in a bid to crack down on irresponsible dog owners. Telford & Wrekin Council put the posters in Newport, after residents complained about the amount of dog mess around the town.

Cllr Scott hopes the new campaign, which is being tested in the town, could also be introduced to the rest of the borough.

Volunteers have identified three specific areas of Newport where they will be focusing their efforts to raise awareness of the issue.

The volunteers will be leafleting households, businesses and schools in hotspot areas and patrolling those places during the coming weeks.

The posters, which say "Thoughtless dog owners – we're watching you" hope to highlight the problem.

Anyone wishing to report further cases should call the council on (01952) 384384 or via www.telford.gov.uk

Free dog waste bags are available from The Guildhall, Newport Library, Newport Swimming Pool or Bishop & Hendry vets.
