Several primary schools will take part in sporting competitions from Monday at various locations. Basketball, netball, gymnastics and hockey are among the sports pupils will take part in.

They will be held at the Marches School in Oswestry, at the Walford campus of North Shropshire College, Sir John Talbot's School in Whitchurch and Whitchurch Rugby Club.

Schools that have qualified for next week's event include Hodnet Primary School. Emma Tomkins, who is the school games organiser for north Shropshire, based at Lakelands Academy in Ellesmere, said: "We have a week-long of sporting competitions across north Shropshire, specifically for primary schools.

"The competitions will see primary schools battle it out for a place at the L3 county games, which are due to take place on March 1 at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

"There will be competitions in basketball, cross-country, netball, gymnastics, hockey, rugby and sportsability."

She added: "The aim of the event is to promote school sport, competition and the benefits it can have on young people."

Jason Roberts, from Hodnet Primary School, said: "We get the pupils ready to compete and make sure we are ready to run it on each day. Participation numbers have doubled from last year. Last year it was limited to one team per school, now schools can bring two or three teams."
