Flood barriers are already up in Shrewsbury and others were going up today in Ironbridge and Bewdley as rainfall dumped in Wales earlier this week works its way down the River Severn.

A number of roads were today closed in Shrewsbury, including Gravel Hill Lane; Sydney Avenue; Colehead Head; Barley Bank, Westbury; Chilton Farm Lane, Atcham; the Atcham to Crosses road; Old Coleham, Victoria Avenue and Berwick Road.

In Bridgnorth, Doctors Lane and Severnside South were both closed today as river levels continued to rise.

The Environment Agency today said flood levels in Shropshire were the highest the county has seen this winter.

The river was expected to peak in Shrewsbury at just over four metres at the Welsh Bridge at lunchtime today, with the Environment Agency expecting barriers to stay up over the weekend.

Last night the Environment Agecy's Dave Throup tweeted:

Today he said:

In Shropshire, standing floodwater today remained in place after Storm Imogen hit the county, resulting in people needing to be rescued from their vehicles by the emergency services.

The Welshpool area was one of the worst affected, with three people having to be rescued from floodwater by the emergency services.

An elderly couple were rescued by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service after they became trapped in their car after driving through floodwater on Monday evening.

The fire service was called shortly after 5pm to the A490 near Forden, close to Welshpool Airport. They were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Later that evening shortly before 10.20pm, the Dyfed-Powys Police required the fire service's assistance in rescuing a man from a van, again near to Welshpool Airport.

Although the worst of Storm Imogen is over, flood warnings remain in place across the region at the River Severn at Montford Bridge and Shrawardine, Pentre, the Quarry in Shrewsbury, and at the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley.

Flood alerts were today also in place at the River Severn Upper Teme, Lower Teme, and the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence.
