Auditor called in over council contracts
An auditor has been called in to look at how a Shropshire town council awards contracts.
The issue came to light at a meeting of Whitchurch Town Council's finance committee when councillors were discussing the Christmas lights contract.
Stephen Platt, town clerk for Whitchurch Council, said that the investigation came about after councillors incorrectly awarded contracts in the past.
He said: "It has come to light that there are a lot of irregularities and it is not as safe as it should have been.
"Councillors in the past have given out the contract in the incorrect way which puts public liability insurance in jeopardy.
"Whitchurch Town Council has a policy to look after local businesses as best we can, but this can't always happen.
"We are getting an auditor in to compile a report and feed that back to councillors."
