Calling all leaplings! Shropshire school in leap year project

It comes around once every four years. And to mark the fact that 2016 is a leap year, one primary school in Shropshire has launched an appeal to find a leap year baby.

Weston Lullingfields Primary School, near Baschurch, is trying to locate people who have a birthday on February 29 to find out their views on it and how they have celebrated over the years.

Richard Arrowsmith, community governor at the school, said: "

We are going to do a feature on leap year birthdays.

"The children will be learning about leap years – what they are and why they happen – and we thought it would be a good idea if we could find people who were born on February 29 and invite them in to school."

The chance of being born on a leap day is said to be one in 1,461.

A person who is born on February 29 may be called a "leapling" or a "leap year baby".

In non-leap years, some leaplings celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1, while others only observe birthdays on the authentic date of February 29.

Anyone who knows of somebody born on February 29, or who is a leap year baby, is asked to call Paula at the school on (01939) 260306.
