British Ironwork Centre in Oswestry closes its doors after 3,000 visitors turn up in just two hours
A Shropshire tourist attraction was forced to close its gates today after attracting 3,000 visitors in just two hours.
Hundreds of vehicles descended on the British Ironwork Centre near Oswestry today and, despite opening up fields for parking and having brought in extra staff, bosses were forced to admit they couldn't cope with the sheer numbers.
The attraction had publicised a range of special events during the day including a display by an exotic zoo, falconry demonstrations, live music and a treasure hunt.
The centre tweeted:
Some of those unable to get into the Ironworks complained of social media of traffic problems on the A5 and disappointed children.
Owner, Clive Knowles said the centre had not expected such a massive response.
"We were a victim of our own success," he said.
"Police were called to attend the site early morning, as we had received over 3,000 visitors in just two hours.
"A bitter decision had to be made and in order to keep everybody safe, the centre was closed to further visitors. We did not anticipate such a surge of attendance over such a small period of time. We only ever want to provide lovely experiences and completely recognise that on this occasion we have let so many people down.
"We will make sure that we make amends to all those who had tickets and were planning to attend today."
Mr Knowles said that in hindsight the mistake had been in putting on a free, unticketed special event for families.
"It seemed like every family stretching from Wrexham to Shrewsbury and Mid Wales had descended on us at the same time. The response was colossal."
"We decided to call the police to help us shut the centre but when an officer arrived he was happy with the steps we were taking."
"If anyone is planning to visit the British Ironworks during the rest of the week please get a ticket in advance or at least ring us before you set out."
