Craig Mayhew struck twice at a Co-op Store in Shifnal, in January and was later identified by police from CCTV images.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday Mayhew was sentenced to a total of 10 weeks in prison.

The court heard that Mayhew took £105 worth of meat items out of the store on January 11 this year.

The following day he was seen putting food worth about £15 into a bag and was about to leave the shop when he was stopped.

Mayhew had threatened to "smash the face in" of the woman member of staff if she prevented him leaving.

He was arrested the following day.

Initially Mayhew, of Smallwood, Sutton Hill, was charged with robbery in relation to the incident involving the verbal threat.

At court he denied robbery, but admitted two charges of theft and both pleas were accepted by the court.

Mr Paul Smith, for Mayhew, said his client had been released from a previous sentence for burglary last year.

He said Mayhew had made progress in conquering his drug addiction, but in January had "fallen off the wagon".
