Newport's Steve is in peak condition for Everest
A Shropshire businessman is preparing to take on the world's highest mountain to raise money for charity.
Steve Murphy, from Newport, will take on the challenge next month, when he will trek to Mount Everest's base camp in the Himalayas.
All the money raised by the 52-year-old will then be given to the charity, Children with Cancer UK.
And on the day the father-of-three reaches the Everest base camp in Nepal he will celebrate his 53rd birthday.
Mr Murphy, the director of LGV-Drivers in the town, said: "I am really looking forward to the challenge, but I am also getting a bit nervous.
"I will be taking part in the trek with 11 other people, who I have not met yet, so that will be interesting.
"While on the trek I will be celebrating my birthday, and that will actually be the hardest day of the 18-day trek.
"That's the day we will be climbing over 18,000ft to the base camp on Everest – I may have to sneak a beer in to celebrate.
"It will be tough but I did a trek a few years ago in Peru, where we went to Machu Picchu.
"That was tough, but not as tough as the challenge in March will be.
"I have been training hard and I have been eating healthy, so that means no pizzas and no kebabs – just lots of greens.
"I will have to make up for it when I get back."
Mr Murphy's three daughters and wife Susie have supported him along the way, which he says has been amazing.
