The top lot at Newport Cottage Care's grand auction will be a signed pair of boots by England and Wasps rugby player James Haskell. Other lots include a holiday for four in Wales, theatre tickets, food and wine hampers and golf clubs.

All money raised will go to a £100,000 fundraising drive for an arts and crafts room at the care centre in Upper Bar. So far almost £10,000 has been raised.

The auction, which will be held at Newport Rugby Club on March 11, will also include a fish and chip supper sponsored by Henshalls Insurance Brokers in Newport.

The firm's managing director, Mark Freeman, recently visited the centre to present a cheque for £300 to pay for the supper.

Don Shaw, who looks after the fundraising for the arts and crafts room appeal, said: "Tickets for the event are £8.50 and we have already paid for the food and wine, so all of the money will go straight to the appeal.

"If we could get about 100 to 150 people to attend we could make about £2,000, which would be great. We have some fantastic lots to be had and we really think this event is one not to miss."

Meanwhile, the NCC quiz night will take place on Friday, from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Each team can have a maximum of four. Tickets are £6 and include a supper.
