Arson-hit Shrewsbury bowling club set to reopen in time for start of the new season

A Shrewsbury bowls club that was damaged in an arson attack last year has reopened in time for the new season.

Greenfields and District Bowls Club in Falstaff Street has been partially closed since vandals set fire to the equipment shed in April 2015.

The blaze then spread to the main building, causing part of the roof to collapse, as well as causing serious smoke and water damage.

As a result of the fire the club was forced to close for almost a year while repairs were carried out to make the main building safe, and to replace the ruined internal fixtures and fittings.

But after a lengthy programme of refurbishment was completed this week the club is back open for business and looking better than ever, according to club treasurer Alison Hubbard.

"Everything's all fully refurbished – it's all looking nice and smart and we're delighted to be able to say that we're fully open once more, and just in time for the new season," she said.

"Of course we were devastated by what happened last year.

"We were just about to start the new bowling season when the fire happened and it was quite a mess."

"It didn't put us totally out of action but we had to serve teas and coffees from a temporary shelter for most of last year.

"There are still one or two things that need doing but it's looking fantastic now, you wouldn't believe the difference."

The newly refurbished facilities include a function room with a licensed bar which is available to hire for parties, meetings and receptions.

Improvements also include the installation of CCTV cameras which was made possible after workers at a nearby supermarket raised £800 to help following the fire last year

Greenfields are hoping their refurbished facilities will trigger a surge of new players to swell their ranks from their existing 80 or so members. Anyone interested in joining the club can either attend on the night or call (01743) 461069 to register their interest.
