70 jobs boost as new Welshpool store is approved
Up to 70 new jobs will be created after plans for a new B&M store in Welshpool were approved by planning bosses.
Powys County Council's planning committee approved the plans for the store, next to the town's Tesco supermarket.
The applicant, Bill Sarre from TJL UK Ltd, based in Jersey, said the B&M shop would need 28 full-time employees and 42 part-time employees, as well as the jobs created by another shop unit once a tenant has been found.
Welshpool Town Council was in favour of the development.
As part of the scheme Powys County Council recommended that Tesco impose a two-hour parking restriction on its car park because of the increase in traffic expected to be created by the new shops.
In response the supermarket brought in a three-hour limit at the start of the week, stopping people parking their cars at the supermarket all day. Anybody who stays longer than the three hours will face a fine, the supermarket has said.
The new regulations come following five years of people being able to use the car park for free.
A Tesco spokesman said: "We're keen to ensure that customers can park easily at our store while shopping with us. Parking will remain free for three hours giving our customers time to use the store and the town centre."
