Sweet Rolo is back on her feet after car accident
Meet nine-year-old Rolo, who has made an amazing recovery after coming off worst in an accident with a car.
The springer spaniel has been named a "star patient" by the staff who treated her at Leonard Brothers Veterinary Centre in Whitchurch.
Rolo's owner brought her in to the centre to find out how her damaged leg could be fixed following the accident.
Louise Brookes, receptionist at the centre in Brownlow Street, said: "She came to see Sarah Gait for a second opinion, one day after the accident.
"Rolo's owner firstly took her to their first opinion vets who gave her very limited options. They did not want to even attempt at repairing Rolo's leg with the skin she had left.
"The dramatic options Rolo's vets had given were amputating the leg, taking a large skin graft from her back for the leg, or putting her to sleep.
"Of course, these options all come across as extreme and considering that, remarkably, no bones were broken, Rolo's owner wanted a second opinion.
"On arrival Sarah gave Rolo some painkillers to help reduce the pain from the extensive wounds."
Ms Brookes said the vet decided that she wanted to attempt to repair Rolo's leg.
She concluded that there was enough skin on the inside of the leg to wrap round and stitch together at the front.
"After 90 minutes of surgery Sarah had closed all the wounds. Amazingly, she had managed to achieve complete closure without any tension on the skin," Ms Brookes said.
"This seemed a miracle considering the state of Rolo's leg beforehand. The team dressed and bandaged Rolo's new leg while she was anaesthetised."
Ms Brookes added: "Now Rolo's leg is completely healed and she is running around once again, just being a crazy springer spaniel.
"The fantastic outcome of what initially seemed to be a sad ending for Rolo is why she is our star patient."
Owner Sally Lea said: "She is doing absolutely fine and to look at her now you wouldn't know she had an injury.
"The vets have done a fantastic job."
