Evie-Sue was in a hurry to be born, leaving Lisa Pooler and Chris Stokes facing the prospect of delivering her themselves. Lisa eventually gave birth on a bathroom floor, with Chris helping out as he was given advice on the phone.

The drama happened at the family home in Malinslee, Telford.

Chris, a 33-year-old factory worker, said: "I was very nervous and worried. When Evie-Sue came out she was crying but then stopped.

"The midwife told me on the phone to give her a good rub and the ambulance arrived very soon after the birth to take over, which was a relief. It feels great being a new dad and we now have a great story to tell family and friends."

Lisa, 27, said that the baby had been due on March 22, but the couple had gone to bed on the evening of March 2 and she started to feel discomfort in the early hours.

She said: "We rang the midwife-led unit in Telford where I was booked to have my baby and said I thought she might be coming early. They told us to come in the next day at 12.30pm but within 40 minutes I had given birth."

She added: "I did not have any pain relief and it was over quite quickly. I still can't believe it."

The pair are now proud parents of a baby daughter, who weighed 6lb 9oz.

The ambulance crew arrived a minute after the birth and the new family were taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford at about 2.15am. They were released the next day and are now enjoying getting to know little Evie-Sue.
