David John Dargan, 29, was given an indefinite prison sentences for public protection after the raid on Lloyds TSB in Dawley in 2008.

Derbyshire Constabulary have appealed for help in tracing the criminal after he absconded from Sudbury open prison in Derbyshire.

In 2009, Dargan, of Broad Street, Salford and fellow thief Gergory Burke, then 25, a binman, of Portland Road, Stretford, were told at Shrewsbury Crown Court they must serve at least five years before being considered for parole.

Dargan was jailed as part of a gang who travelled from Greater Manchester to Shropshire and hurled a sledgehammer through a window of a Lloyds TSB branch in Dawley and climbed into the bank minutes before it opened.

They snatched bags and boxes containing cash as an ATM was being filled at the branch in September last year. Two women cashiers were left frightened and shocked, but unhurt.

They got away with £425,000 in a raid that was described as "meticulously planned."

In a proceeds of crime hearing, Dargan and Paul Fielding and Brian Moran were ordered to repay £61,000.

Dargan is described as white, 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and a shaved head.

He has connections in the Salford area and Leicestershire.

Anyone who sees Dargan, or who knows where he is should call the police immediately on 101 or 999.
