Call for weight limit to protect Ludlow's damaged Ludford Bridge
A weight restriction should be placed on a Ludlow's historic Ludford Bridge to stop a repeat of an accident that saw a lorry destroy part of its wall, it has been claimed.
Ludlow Town Council wants measures put in place to protect the Grade I-listed bridge, which carries one of the main routes into Ludlow across the River Teme.
Scaffolding is being put up to repair the bridge, which was shut in February after a crash and is now not expected to reopen until the start of May.
Councillor Andy Boddington, Shropshire councillor for Ludlow North, said: "Scheduled monument consent has been granted for the repair works. Historic England has waived the usual four-week notice that is required before work on the bridge can commence. Ludlow Chamber of Commerce has renewed calls for a ban."
"Others believe that better signs will resolve the problem."
An online survey started by Councillor Boddington shows 90 per cent of those who have responded think heavy goods vehicles should be banned from the bridge.
He said initial plans for divers to recover the fallen bridge stonework from the river bed had to be abandoned due to high water levels, but would likely resume after the scaffolders finished their work.
