A495 closed as man seriously injured in Shropshire border crash

Emergency services in Powys were stretched by a spate of crashes on the busy roads as people headed for their Easter break. Trunk roads were closed and motorists faced diversions throughout the day.
The driver of a Renault Scenic was airlifted to specialist trauma centre following the accident on the A495 Llansantffraid to Meifod road, at around 8.35am. The car cleared a hedge to end up in a farmer's field .
The Welsh Ambulance service said that one man was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Firefighters from Welshpool and Llanfyllin were also called out to help with the incident.
Police officer said the road, a busy holiday route for people travelling from Shropshire and the Midlands to the Welsh coast, was closed to assist the emergency services.
Inspector Steve Thomas said: "Closures were put in place due to collision investigation work.
"Police are investigating a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a blue Renault Scenic that resulted in the driver being airlifted to hospital. If members of the public were in the area at the time and saw what happened please call us on 101."
Five vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the A480 just north of Welshpool,between the A458 Buttington Cross and B4393 Canal Road just before 3pm. It closed the road between Welshpool and Four Croses, south of Oswestry.
The Welsh Ambulance Service said that several people were treated at the scene and at least one person was taken by land ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
He said three ambulance cars and two ambulances were on scene.
A two-vehicle accident on the A470 between Rhayader and Llangurig lead to road closures for much of the day. Police have not given any information about casualties from the lunchtime accident.
