Wrekin Road in Wellington was closed to traffic for about an hour after the blaze at Hadrian Flats, a supported living complex run by Eden Futures.

Residents got out of the building within minutes with the help of staff members.

Police closed the section of Wrekin Road around the flats while two fire crews from Wellington dealt with the blaze, which was reported at about 1.30pm today.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, a water jet and a positive pressure ventilation fan to tackle the fire, which was out by about 2.10pm.

Couches from the living area in the flats were destroyed in the blaze and hauled out into the front garden area.

Station manager Andy Blizard, speaking for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "There was a fire in the ground-floor living area. The cause is currently under investigation.

"The smoke detectors alerted all the occupants and everybody got out safely," he said.

The road was re-opened by police at about 2.40pm.
