Investigations are still ongoing to find the cause of the

in Wood Lane, but firefighters believe it was caused by an unknown item that has self-heated.

Forty firefighters tackled the fire which involved large piles of plastic being destroyed at the Tudor Griffiths Group site on Monday.

Guy Williams, from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Investigations haven't concluded yet but at the moment we are treating it as accidental. It appears to be something that has come in and self-heated. This happens sometimes with events like barn fires where certain products can just set fire.

"They heat up over time and gradually smoulder."

Firefighters from Baschurch, Ellesmere, Prees, Wem and Whitchurch as well as the Environment Agency were called to the site at about 10.30am on Monday.

It took crews about three hours to get the blaze under control.
