Former Shropshire County Council chairman Brian Gillow dies at 88

The last chairman of the former Shropshire County Council before it became a unitary authority has died at the age of 88.

Brian Gillow was first elected as a county councillor in 1981 and represented the Woore division, near Market Drayton, until he retired in 2013.

He was particularly interested in education and had been leader of the local education committee prior to becoming chairman of the county council before the new unitary authority council was established in 2008.

He was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to local government and the voluntary sector.

Malcolm Pate, leader of Shropshire Council, said: "He was a real gentleman in every sense of the word, and will be sadly missed by all those who knew him."
