Two elderly women and a man were injured following a two-car smash on the old A5 road between Telford and Shrewsbury.
Two ambulances and the air ambulance were dispatched to the scene at the junction of the B4394 and B43801 near Norton just before 4pm, while police put up road blocks to shut the road off.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "The two cars had been involved in a serious collision and one passenger from one of the cars was trapped.
"The passenger, an elderly woman, sustained chest and pelvic injuries in the collision and ambulance staff worked with the fire service to extricate her from the wreckage.
"She was given pain relief and immobilised before being airlifted to Royal Stoke University Hospital.
"The driver, an elderly man, was assessed but escaped injury and didn't require hospital treatment.
"The passenger in the second car, an elderly woman, sustained injuries to her hand, chest and back and was immobilised onto a spinal board before she was taken by land ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
"The driver, an elderly man, was treated for minor chest and abdominal injuries caused by the seatbelt and was taken to the same hospital for further care."
