Councillor Gareth Morgan has called for an investigation to be carried out by highways and the trunk road agency following a number of road traffic collisions occurring during the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Four lives were claimed in a crash on the A470 between Rhayader and Llangurig on Good Friday, including Vida Alford , 86, and 58-year-old Gillian Alford, from Shropshire, who were passengers in a red Seat Leon.

While both of those travelling in a second car, a silver Vauxhall Agila, died at the scene. They were 77-year-old Margaretta Jones and her grandson, five-year-old Ned Jones. They were from Capel Bangor, Aberystwyth.

And on the same day an 83-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, was killed in a crash on the A483 in Welshpool.

Councillor Morgan has said the region's roads need examining to prevent further devastation for families.

He said: "Too many people are being killed on Mid Wales' roads. There were the awful accidents during the bank holiday but even before that, in total there's been around six fatal road accidents in Powys in such a small radius, I just think it's more than a coincidence, and I think the highways and the trunk road agency need to carry out an investigation."

Following the crashes, Inspector Mike Melly of Dyfed-Powys Police said reducing the number of casualties and tragedies on the region's roads is a priority for the force.

He said: "My officers in the roads policing units have seen and dealt with first-hand the number of tragedies that occurred on our roads over the past week and on the bank holiday weekend.

"Attending such incidents is always harrowing, and our thoughts are very much with the families who have lost loved ones."

Inspector Melly said officers will be patrolling the area as roads get busier.
