Pensioner died days after Shrewsbury crash, inquest told
A 93-year-old man died days after a crash in Shrewsbury that saw his car collide with a van.
Benjamin Whittingham, who was known as John, was pulling out of Mount Pleasant Road in Heath Farm, Shrewsbury, when the Honda Jazz he was driving collided with a Vauxhall Astra van travelling along Ellesmere Road.
There was no indication that either vehicle had been travelling at speed before the crash, an inquest held yesterday heard.
Following the accident on December 23 last year, Mr Whittingham was checked over by paramedics and was able to return to his home in Prescott Road, Baschurch.
But he later felt unwell and was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where a CT scan revealed that he had suffered from an acute and chronic subdural haematoma. He received palliative care and died on December 30.
A post mortem was carried out which gave the cause of death as a subdural haematoma and pneumonia.
Coroner Mr John Ellery concluded that Mr Whittingham died following a road traffic collision.
