KFC will open in Newtown on April 22 on the Pool Road site formerly occupied by The Co-op supermarket.

Work is well under way on the new restaurant and Councillor Joy Jones said she is delighted with the economic boost it will bring to the town.

She said: "It is great news, and the branch has been greatly received in Newtown.

"It is going to bring a good amount of employment into the town, and is going to boost the economy."

Concerns were raised about the amount of litter that could be created in the area, with McDonalds just across the road.

However, Councillor Jones has been informed this will not be a problem. She added: "We have been assured there will be constant litter picking to keep the place tidy. This will happen by the staff working at the branch."

The company currently has locations in Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford amongst others. It recently advertised for a manager for a branch in Welshpool, although no planning application has been made.

Gastronomy Foods holds 13 franchises for the fried chicken giant at venues across Shropshire and Mid Wales.
