The Queen's 90th birthday: Beacons to be lit across Shropshire and Mid Wales
People in Shropshire and Mid Wales will join others from around the nation in lighting a beacon to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.
A host of beacons will be lit across the region, including on some of its highest peaks, to mark the occasion on Thursday.
In Shrewsbury a beacon will be lit in the town's Square from 7.30pm as part of a national trail of more than 1,000 flames.
Members of the public are invited to gather in front of the Old Market Hall .
The Shrewsbury Brass Band will perform in the Square from 7.30pm until shortly before 8pm when the National Anthem will be sung. Following this the Lord Lieutenant, Sir Algernon Heber-Percy, will light the beacon.
In Telford the celebratory beacon will move from its usual home on top of The Wrekin to the new Southwater development. The beacon will be lit at the new multi-million pound shopping and eating district, close to the Town Park.
The last time a beacon was lit on the Wrekin, near Wellington, it was to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2012.
In Welshpool a beacon will be lit outside the town hall as part of a ceremony beginning at 8.15pm.
The evening will include music from the Porthywaen youth and training band, and two local singers.
Following the beacon lighting, tea, coffee and a celebratory birthday cake will be served in the Corn Exchange.
There will also be a beacon lit at the top of Red Bank in Welshpool at 8.30pm.
A beacon will also be lit on the summit of Grinshill, near Wem.
Peter Slark, chairman of Clive Parish Council, said: "The parish of Clive has registered a beacon to be lit at 8.30pm on the summit of Grinshill by kind permission of landowner Robin Thompson, Sansaw Estate.
"We have lit a beacon for the last two or three events, including for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
"We have an ideal site for the beacon at Grinshill. It's where we have always done it.
"The local landowner who owns the hill will be building it for us so it isn't costing the parish council anything. There were suggestions about us singing the national anthem but in the end we decided against it and there will be no formalities about it."
