The 7.15am train, which was operated by London Midland was due to run from Shrewsbury to Birmingham New Street.
But the driver noticed an on-board problem and had to stop the train so he could sort it out.
It broke down just yards from the station - meaning a several other trains, including two operated by Arriva Trains Wales, were also delayed.
A spokesman for London Midland said: "The train was delayed by 17 minutes. There was a problem on the train which the driver identified shortly after leaving the platform.
"The driver was able to rectify the problem himself and the train was soon on its way."
