Worshippers welcome cash boost for urgent Shropshire Norman church roof repairs
A village church near Ludlow dating back to the Norman era has bagged nearly £75,000 for much-needed roof repairs.
Money has been pledged to St Mary Magdalene Church in Ashford Carbonell, near Ludlow, from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Work will involve restoring the north slope of the nave roof and both slopes of the porch roof, using Herefordshire stone tiles.
The parochial church council said the refurbishment was not likely start until this time next year because stone used for the tiles took six months to be weathered. Church members also want to ensure a winter bat roost is not disturbed.
Church warden Peter Stretton said it was great news for the future of the building.
He said: "Restoration of the roof will conserve an otherwise sound and valued historical building so it can continue to serve the village, parish and wider community into the future."
A number of community and heritage activities have already been held to support the church roof project this year, including a 12 hour non-stop Entertainathon, a strawberry tea event and historical talks.
A series of illustrated leaflets and postcards are also being produced to provide information about the church and its history.
The church has served the parish of Ashford Carbonell for 900 years.
