Newport potholes to be filled in £500,000 works
Potholes in Newport are being targeted as part of a £500,000 investment by Telford & Wrekin Council.
The council wants to improve existing road surfaces and extend their lifespan.
The funding has come from the borough council's highway capital programme as part of its Pride in Your Community initiative to make the borough a better place to live, work and visit.
The work is being targeted in and around Newport and is being scheduled to start at the beginning of the school summer holidays from July 25 to help minimise any disruption. The whole works programme is expected to take around eight weeks.
The roads the works will focus on are Audley Avenue, Audley Road, Ashworth Way, Upper Bar/High Street junction, Forton Road, Lapworth Way/Vineyard Drive, and Lower Bar – Water Lane to B5062 – and Meadow Road.
Work will also take place at a later date this year as part of the scheme at two other locations in Newport – Aqualate Close and Shuker Close.
Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for business, customers and neighbourhood services, said: "We had originally planned to do this work later in the year but after listening to comments from the community we are now bringing this forward as a priority. Making the borough a better place and tackling those things that matter to people where they live is what Pride in Your Community is all about."
The council had planned these works as part of its medium-term road repairs programme but will carry these out sooner than originally planned in response to comments from residents and businesses about the condition of these roads.
The Council's Pride in Your Community programme has already invested in a range of schemes in Newport. These include £63,000 in grants to The Hub and Newport Cottage Care Centre. Newport is also set to receive almost £120,000 from the Pride in Your High Streets scheme to support a range of business and tourism initiatives.
