Plea for changes at 'danger' Telford crossroads

Crossroads in Telford have been labelled as "hazardous" and are responsible for at least one accident a week, according to staff at a car dealership who have called for road improvements.

The latest crash at the corner of Haygate Road and Bridge Road, in Wellington, happened on Thursday afternoon.

A woman in her 70s was taken to hospital after a Nissan Micra and a Suzuki Wagon R collided.

Another woman was treated at the scene for shoulder pain and an eight-year-old girl was treated at the scene for knee pain.

But staff at Peter Morris Cars, situated by the crossroads in Wrekin Road, claim the incident was the latest in a long line of crashes and have branded the crossroads as dangerous.

Joe Barnes, a service adviser at the firm, said: "As a local business to this hazardous junction we have at least one accident a week.

"It was a bad crash on Thursday. The airbags deployed and they had to wait for the police and ambulance service."

He added: "We need an action plan to get this sorted before someone is seriously injured or killed."

The 23-year-old, from Wroxeter, said the crash on Thursday had also caused traffic jams for more than an hour and in previous crashes cars had come close to colliding with the firm's own gates.

He said: "I've been working here three years and there have been lots of crashes.

"It's just the volume of traffic. There are cars trying to turn right or left.

"They wait in the middle of the road but it's busy and people don't see people turning across the road.

"It's difficult to get in and out once the road is blocked up too and when we fix cars we have to go and road test them.

"There are no traffic lights there, but even a small roundabout would help things."

Mechanic Dale Owen, 32, of Donnington, was one of the first people at the scene during Thursday's car crash and called 999.

He said: "It was a head-on collision. There was an elderly lady in one car and it looked like a mother and daughter in the other car.

"They were directing traffic around it and it caused chaos for a while.

"It's a bad junction. Perhaps a roundabout or traffic lights should go in there."

Telford & Wrekin Council said the authority had previously looked at designs for a signalised junction at the location.

Council spokesman Russell Griffin added: "However, while the necessary funding to deliver the scheme is not in place at present, we will continue to look at available funding."
