80-year-old Telford driver banned after drink driving
An 80-year-old driver whose eyes were glazed and speech slurred when he was pulled over by police has been handed a 12-month driving ban.
Nigel Cotton pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared at Telford Magistrates Court.
Mrs Abigail Hall, prosecuting, said police pulled over Cotton in his Vauxhall Vectra in New Street, Oakengates, Telford, on April 21. She said: "They stated he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred."
He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to the police station.
Cotton, of Withington Close, Oakengates, was given another breath test and gave a reading of 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
Ms Lisa Morris-Jones, representing Cotton, said he had been driving since 1966 and had a clean driving licence. She said Cotton goes into Oakengates once a week to go shopping and usually has a couple of pints before returning home.
She said on this occasion Cotton had been drinking lager and had not known he was over the legal drink-drive limit.
She added: "He has asked me to put forward his apologies to the court for acting so foolishly."
Cotton was also handed a £60 fine and ordered to pay £135 costs.
