Pictures: Murder probe police search site near Oswestry
[gallery] A site near Oswestry has been searched by police in connection with a murder investigation.
Police and military personnel spent much of Wednesday at what is said to farmland in Henlle Lane on the edge of Gobowen in connection with what is believed to be an historic crime.
Officers said the activity is part of an ongoing investigation by North Wales Police following recent information that an unidentified man has been murdered and disposed of on the outskirts of Wrexham.
They said no-one was arrested at the property, which local people said has been used as farmland, following the search.
Police and military personnel worked into the evening at the smallholding, next to a caravan park.
Police taped off part of a field on the lower side of a small hill, and dogs could be heard barking on the site, which consists of one large agricultural building and a handful of smaller buildings.
About eight officers searched the field while three other men made a detailed search of a penned off area attached to a large shed. Straw in the area was turned over and dug through.
Superintendent Sian Beck, North Wales Police area commander for Wrexham, said: "Detectives executed a search warrant in the Gobowen area for evidence in relation to an ongoing murder investigation.
"No-one was arrested at the property but during the search the expertise of military personnel with specialist search equipment was required and they remain at the scene. This action follows a number of searches conducted over the last few days in the Wrexham and Gobowen area, and is believed to be linked to a historic murder.
"This is an ongoing investigation and we are still attempting to identify the man and where his remains have been deposited.
"If anyone has any information to assist I'd ask they make contact with us."
Many Gobowen residents were unaware of what was happening just mile or so out of the centre of the village.
Some had heard that police were at what they called the pig farm.
Golfers at Henlle would not comment last night.
