Whitchurch mayor to remain in office after all
Whitchurch mayor Mike McDonald, who announced he would be standing down as a councillor, has been re-elected due to "overwhelming support".
Councillor McDonald will serve another year as mayor – despite announcing earlier this month that he would leave the town council to ease his workload.
He described the support as "quite humbling" and said: "I decided to continue to serve the council following overwhelming support received recently from individuals and community groups, support which I've actually found quite humbling.
"Sometimes things are more important than just thinking about yourself – and working as a team I have the support of the majority of my council colleagues to enable me to fit things in."
"We have a number of challenges over the coming months and it is far better to face them together, to ensure the best outcomes for our town."
"With that in mind, we currently have three vacancies on the town council.
"Previous awareness of governance would be advantageous - as would a business or finance background. But moreover an enthusiasm to contribute to the ongoing success of our local communities within the town is essential."
Anyone who would like to join the council is asked to contact the town clerk or councillor McDonald.
