This is the dramatic moment a driver was confronted by a car swerving into the wrong lane as he made his way through a town centre.

In the clip – caught on the motorist's dashcam – one BMW attempts to overtake another, crossing into the path of oncoming traffic.

In the film, taken at about 7.30pm on Monday the motorist, who has not been named, says he was driving through Wellington with his young son.

He is seen driving along Bridge Street, up until the traffic lights opposite the former Clifton Cinema.

At that point, the two white cars appear from the direction of Queen Street.

Turning onto Bridge Street, one car is seen moving into the right hand lane in an attempt to overtake the other.

When its driver spots the oncoming car, it swerves back but remains straddling the two lanes as it passes.

Despite the scenes, West Mercia Police say they have not been made aware of the video and that Wellington does not have a particular problem with dangerous driving.

Members of the public have been urged to report similar incidents.

Paul Roberts, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: "It does not appear that the incident shown in the video has been reported to police or that it is indicative of a wider problem in the area at present.

"West Mercia Police takes all incidents of dangerous driving very seriously and urges members of the public to report any such incidents they may witness.

"Dangerous driving puts all road users at risk and all reports will be investigated thoroughly as we remain committed to keeping the local community safe on our regions' roads."

The news comes just weeks after it was reported that police in Bridgnorth were launching a crackdown on dangerous driving in the town.

West Mercia Police said vehicles had been seen doing "doughnuts" – spinning round and round rapidly – on the car park in Whitburn Street and generally driving in an "inconsiderate manner".

Residents have also told police of drivers performing laps of the town at high speed.

According to residents, they have also been lapping the town and relief road by Sainsbury's at high speeds.

One of the witnesses claimed to have seen a young girl nearly hit while crossing the relief road.

Police say they will continue to patrol the area in a bid to deter and identify those involved, as well as checking CCTV to try and obtain footage and vehicle registration numbers.
