Motorists see red in Oswestry rush-hour chaos

There was motoring misery when traffic lights got stuck, leaving commuters approaching Oswestry literally seeing red at rush hour.

Drivers were held up for more than 20 minutes in one direction along the Shrewsbury Road and Maesbury Road junction between 7.45am to 9pm on Monday.

Traffic was jammed and later at a standstill at lights that were permanently on red. It was a happier story for motorists in the opposite direction, however, where the lights were on green allowing free-flowing traffic for drivers leaving the town.

Many commuters performed three-point turns to avoid the rush-hour jams and headed towards the Morda approach.

Delivery driver Jase Whittingham was one of those stuck in the queue. He said: "As delivering the Shropshire Star, I have major daily deadlines and to be stuck in a queue for so long was depressing and stressful for motorists and me.

"I was stuck for at least 20 minutes from 8am and had to deliver to Aldi, in Maesbury Road, so there was no turning back."

"Then, when I returned from the town in the opposite direction, the lights were constantly on green, so it became obvious to me that there was a problem with the traffic lights. I hope it gets sorted soon."

There were also hold ups on Gobowen road due to traffic lights for gas works repairs.
