A proposal has been submitted to cater for up to a maximum of 20 touring caravans on Oak Farm, Marton, near Wem.

Applicants say it will enhance leisure facilities in the area, and visitors will help support other businesses operating locally.

The scheme, which has been submitted to Shropshire Council, will also involve creating a toilet and shower block as well as a new vehicle access and driveway.

Part of the site was previously used as a trailer park in association with a haulage business which operated from there.

Documents submitted in support of the application say: "It will support sustainable rural tourism and leisure developments that benefit businesses in rural areas, communities and visitors, and which respect the character of the countryside.

"It will promote the development and diversification of agricultural and other land-based rural businesses.

"Associated landscaping will be undertaken to provide for an attractive site for visitors including shared areas incorporating children's play area, picnic benches etc.

"Visitors to the site will have easy access by car to pubs/eating facilities and shops in the nearest villages i.e. Burlton, Myddle and Baschurch and further afield Shrewsbury and Ellesmere which will support businesses accordingly.

"The applicant intends to contact the local tourism officer to obtain details of pamphlets, leaflets etc appertaining to local attractions and facilities to help direct visitors towards them accordingly.

"In addition, details of local pubs and eateries including menus will be made available."

The proposal is also expected to create two part-time jobs.

"There will also be employment relating to the running and upkeep of the site.

"On the approach to the caravan site itself, there will be an arrivals area and reception desk for the aid of visitors.

"This will ensure visitors are advised of the amenities on site, provided with information as requested relating to local places of interest, eating facilities etc and being directed to their specific plots," the supporting documents add.

All of the caravan pitches will be directly accessible from the internal driveway, with each caravan having space for a vehicle alongside.

People can comment on the application as part of consultation into the scheme via Shropshire Council's website.

The council is hoping to make a final decision on whether the holiday park proposal can go-ahead by August 15.
