The authority is inviting companies to bid for a tender to provide an online payment and ordering system for school meals.

The contract is worth a potential £300,000 and the system would be used by Shire Services, the council's main meals provider for primary and secondary schools in Shropshire.

A document inviting bids for the contract states that it wants "an online payment system which facilitates the collection of school dinner money and allows parents or pupils to pre-order their choice of meal in advance of consumption."

It adds: "This system will be rolled out in primary schools across the region in phases.

Shire Services currently operate in Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Cheshire and the West Midlands providing school meals to nearly 140 schools and 26,000 pupils.

"This system forms part of a wider project within Shire Services looking at modernising the service and existing processes as part of our commitment to continually improving the experience of our service users."

Shire Services provides about 17,000 meals a day in Shropshire, and a further 8,000 in neighbouring counties.

It includes meals for more than 100 primary schools and 15 secondary schools in Shropshire, as well as 76 sixth form colleges, independent schools and schools in North Wales, Telford, Herefordshire, Cheshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

Parents can currently pay for meals online with Telford & Wrekin Council.
