Plans were today submitted for the redevelopment of Telford's bus station - and here is how it might look in the future.

Artists impressions show how new buildings could look on the site of the current central bus station on Malinsgate, next to Telford Shopping Centre.

The proposals are the latest phase of the multi-million pound transformation of the town centre.

A £1.3 million contribution towards the cost of the new station has been secured by Telford & Wrekin Council from Marches LEP

The application follows public consultation in March, when nearly 1,500 viewed the plans for the project. The shopping centre said it has listened to public opinion while putting together the plans, keeping it in the same place with a new weather-protected route leading to the shops.

The planning application also includes proposals for redevelopment in this part of the shopping centre, including larger stores, a new entrance from Northfield Street and a new mall within the centre to connect New Street and Sherwood Square.

The bus station plans have been prepared in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council and Arriva Midlands & Shires.

A £1.3 million contribution towards the cost has been secured by the council from Marches Local Enterprise Partnership.

A decision on the plans is expected before the end of the year and, if approved, the new station could be complete by autumn 2017. No services will be disrupted during construction.

In 2015 it had originally been proposed to move the bus station to the south end of the Brown Elm car park, near Southwater.

But after a backlash from users, it was decided to keep it in its current location.

Earlier this year, construction started on the first part of the shopping centre's redevelopment, the Southern Quarter on the site of the former Focus Do it All store.

TGI Friday's, Prezzo and Handmade Burger Company already signed up to open in Spring 2017.

The Northern Quarter redeveloment is also under way.

Guy Beaumont, who is helping to lead the redevelopment, said: "The new Bus Station will provide modern facilities and a much more welcoming environment."
